Police Car for “Favela”
Project
Exterior
Location
ArtCenter, Pasadena, CA.
Date
Sep - Dec 2023
The Favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has one of the highest crime rates in the world. I found that the police forces of Rio are having problems fighting crime using their current vehicles due to the unique terrain of the Favela —— extremely narrow alleyways, super steep slopes, 90+ degree turns, and multiple obstacles. The police trucks/UTVs they are using now are too big&heavy for the alley, too long for the turns, too much cost&time to repair.
To get the police forces on the scene faster and provide them with a more effective vehicle to fight crime, I studied the terrain and designed this police car specifically for the Favela.
This car is designed small&compact to fit in the alley, cheap&easy to maintain. High ground clearance, airless tires, and short overhangs allow it to perform on slopes and rough terrains. The bumpers and the body side protection are designed to be rectangular rubber blocks so they can hit and clear obstacles on the way while not getting deformed, plus it is fast, easy/cheap to replace. Headlights and taillights are designed to be placed on the outside of the body so they can be easily replaced.
